24 March - 26 March 2016: International symposium The Politics of Dress and Identity in Eastern Mediterranean Societies, Past and Present

The international symposium The Politics of Dress and Identity in Eastern Mediterranean Societies, Past andPresent was a great succes and we are happy to share some of the results with you! You can find the abstractbook here. In addition, videos of the presentations can be viewed here. A selection of the papers will also be published in an edited volume.

This symposium explored the interplay between dress and identity in the greater Mediterranean basin, with a special focus on Muslim societies and interconnected cultures. It brought together scholars from different disciplines, using a wide spectrum of methods, with the aim of putting perceptions of dress in the past and present into a broader perspective. Themes that recurred throughout the papers were dress as part of the representation of the Self and the Other – both in itself and in depictions – and the entanglement of sartorial indicators of culture, status, and religion.
